Mambo is an exciting mix of mayhem, enthusiasm and sweetness, making him one of the most dynamic and captivating members of the herd. Whether he’s splashing with his herd in the muddy dam, having spirited sparring matches with Zindoga or unexpectedly running off on his own or with his mom, Mambo keeps us all on our toes. Known for his mischievous antics, like the time he caused a full-blown search operation involving helicopters, Mambo has earned his reputation as a rule-breaker. Yet, amid all the excitement and trouble, Mambo has his moments of calm, showing us a softer side and allowing his herd and carers a brief break from his restless energy.

Baby Mambo in 2009

Mambo’s journey through life is made even more interesting by his relationships within the herd. He is often seen with Khanyisa, his little sister, with whom he shares a unique bond. Mambo and Zindoga have grown closer throughout their late teenage years. Both bulls are learning valuable lessons along the way, but enjoy sparring and sharing quiet moments with each other. While he loves to challenge and engage in sparring with the other elephants, he also has a strong independent streak. Mambo isn’t afraid to wander off on his own, following his own path. Despite this independence, Mambo has good role models within the herd, such as his mother Lundi, the wise female Setombe, and older bulls Somopane, Sebakwe, Fishan and Jabulani, who all help keep him in check, though Mambo isn’t shy about challenging them from time to time.

Mambo stands out not just because of his lively personality but also due to his distinctive physical traits. He has grown into a sturdy, independent bull, with a rounded forehead and tusks that point outwards, giving him a strong, unmistakable profile. Perhaps his most recognisable feature is the tear in his right ear—a familiar trait he shares with his mother, Lundi. This tear, along with his stocky build and wide-set tusks, makes Mambo easily identifiable within the herd.

Mambo’s mischievous spirit and independent streak make him a rule-breaker, teaching us the value of pushing boundaries and discovering who we are. He is always ready for action, whether it’s sparring with others, splashing in the mud or chasing off buffalo with his mom. With his distinctive good looks and unpredictable nature, Mambo keeps us on our toes and reminds us of the wildness and excitement that comes with being a young bull in the herd.

As Mambo continues to grow, we look forward to more of his adventures, his mischief and the undeniable charm that makes him such an unforgettable part of the herd. Here’s to 15 years of Mambo—may the mayhem continue!
