On 19 August 2006, the Jabulani herd welcomed a very special arrival: the first calf ever born within the rescued herd, Limpopo. Nineteen years later, we celebrate not only her birthday but also the journey she has made, growing into a confident, protective and compassionate young elephant who carries the legacy of her family with pride.
Named after both the great river that flows between South Africa and Zimbabwe and the South African province of the same name, Limpopo’s very name connects her to the story of the herd’s rescue and new beginnings. Her mother, Tokwe, is the matriarch of the herd, a calm and wise leader whose influence has shaped Limpopo into the elephant she is today. While her father remains a mystery, possibly Sebakwe or even a wild bull from the reserve, Limpopo has inherited the strength, intelligence and caring spirit that runs through her mother’s line.

A Symbol of New Beginnings
Limpopo’s birth was more than just a joyful moment. It was deeply significant. Elephants do not reproduce if they feel unsafe or under stress. For Tokwe to give birth in her new home showed just how secure and content she felt after being rescued from a culling operation in Zimbabwe. Limpopo’s arrival was a living sign of hope, proof that healing and trust had taken root within the herd.
The Big Sister of the Herd
From her earliest days, Limpopo has stepped into the role of protector and caregiver. As the eldest of the younger elephants, she naturally took on the responsibility of helping her mother with Pisa, Timisa, Khanyisa and the others. Whether standing guard when lions are near or playfully engaging with the young bulls, Limpopo balances strength with gentleness. She has become a patient teacher to the little ones, still practising her skills as an allomother but showing remarkable instincts that will one day prepare her for motherhood herself.
Her confidence shines through in everything she does. Having grown up in a stable and loving herd, Limpopo has never known the trauma that so many orphaned elephants have faced. This foundation of security has given her an assured presence. She knows who she is, where she belongs and the role she is destined to play.

A Matriarch in the Making
Over the past nineteen years, Limpopo has matured into a strikingly beautiful young elephant, her neat, slender tusks and athletic build marking her as Tokwe’s daughter through and through. Beyond her appearance, though, it is her empathy and intelligence that stand out. She reads the emotions of her herd mates with ease and acts with instinctive protectiveness when needed.
Watching Limpopo closely trail her mother, learning every step of the way, it is easy to imagine her future as a matriarch herself. Just as Tokwe leads with wisdom, resilience and compassion, Limpopo shows the qualities of a leader in waiting, strong enough to protect, gentle enough to nurture and deeply devoted to her family.
Celebrating Limpopo at 19
On her 19th birthday, we celebrate Limpopo not just for who she is but for everything she represents: the promise of new life, the bonds of family and the future of the herd. She has brought immeasurable joy to her herd and to all of us who have had the privilege of watching her grow.
Happy 19th birthday, Limpopo. May the years ahead see you continue to flourish, inspire and carry forward the legacy of your remarkable mother, Tokwe.
