At HERD, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of conservation leaders. Through our partnership with NewBridge Graduate Institute, we are honoured to provide practical learning opportunities that bridge the gap between theory and real-world application. We are delighted to introduce our newest conservation students, Anri and Mariska, who have started their journey at HERD.
Each year, two dedicated Nature Management students from NewBridge Graduate Institute join our team during the third year of their studies, committing themselves to a comprehensive 10-month programme. This practical experience serves as a pivotal step in their path towards becoming adept conservationists, providing them with insights, skills, and experiences that will shape their future careers.
During their time at HERD, our conservation students immerse themselves in a diverse range of conservation activities, gaining hands-on experience while contributing to our vital initiatives. From road maintenance and erosion control to fence repairs and composting, they play an integral role in the day-to-day operations of our organisation. They actively participate in various projects, assist with stock takes, and contribute to the upkeep and irrigation of our bana grass plantation, among other essential tasks. Each day, they acquire practical skills in various facets of conservation management.
Beyond their practical responsibilities, our students have the opportunity to explore the complexities of land restoration, wildlife management, and habitat conservation. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, they learn about ecosystem dynamics, species conservation strategies, and the importance of sustainable resource management. Through exposure to real-world challenges and decision-making processes, they develop critical thinking skills and resilience in the face of environmental issues.
Furthermore, our students benefit from a supportive learning environment that fosters collaboration, creativity, and personal growth. They engage with a diverse team of professionals, exchanging ideas and gaining valuable insight from experts in the field. By becoming deeply involved in HERD’s initiatives, they cultivate a deep appreciation for nature and a sense of responsibility towards its protection.
