On Saturday the 12th of August, HERD, along with AdventureTails, hosted the first Trails for Trunks physical event at the Big Red Barn in Pretoria. Distances varied from 5km to 21km for walkers, runners and cyclists. Despite the chilly winter morning, we had 133 eager participants arrive at 7am – ready to go! Runners and cyclists were off at 8am and wasted no time securing their spot in the race. We were amazed by the speed of the competitors, and a few even repeated the route! Many took the morning to have a relaxing walk through the serene bush to escape the city life for a few hours.

At the end of the route, people were met by the energising MC who cheered them on through the last stretch. Everyone received a medal, and the first 100 registered participants received a goodie bag with energy-filled snacks and vouchers. After all the contestants returned to the starting point, we had a prize giving for the top 3 winners in each category, along with extra prizes such as “Loudest Herd” and “Best Solitary Bull”. However, those who attended were not too worried about winning, but were focused on raising awareness on World Elephant Day. Everyone went all out when it came to sharing stories, dressing up and going WILD for elephants!

We are very proud of our supporters who made the day a fantastic experience for us all!

We are over the moon about the support we received. Not only did the participants give the race their all, but they took time to donate to HERD and support by purchasing our merchandise. All the support goes towards the care of the Jabulani herd. In case you missed out, the displayed merchandise can be purchased on our website and all proceeds go to HERD.

We had a lot of extra fluffy contestants, and they were just as excited as their humans! Having all the pups join made everyone’s day that much better and kept spirits up during the icy morning.

A big shoutout to all our incredible sponsors for helping us fill these yummy goodie bags with snacks and vouchers, and for your support for HERD!
