In recent weeks, extreme rainfall and flooding across Limpopo Province have resulted in severe destruction of roads, bridges, and drainage systems, as well as to sanitation and power infrastructure.
Thankfully, the rain has temporarily ceased, but access to many areas, including the HERD orphanage, remains severely restricted, heightening risks to both human and animal safety.
While national disaster status enables government response mechanisms, conservation NGOs such as HERD often fall outside primary relief funding streams. For HERD, infrastructure failure has immediate consequences for animal welfare, staff safety, and organisational viability.
Once these have been addressed, we begin the long process of assessing the full extent of the flood damage. Our long-term restoration plan will be communicated as it progresses.
You can help us help the herd by donating to our flood relief fund directly or by purchasing items from our Wishlist.
Our main priority remains the safety of our elephants, staff, guests, and the surrounding conservation community, while carefully monitoring the impact of this flooding on the land and the recovery required.
