Fenya will always be in our hearts ๐Ÿ’›

Elephant snare victim, Fenya was brought into our care at HERD Elephant Orphanage on 17 February 2021. She was found on a private game reserve in Phalaborwa, in Limpopo province, by a local resident and had a wire snare wrapped tightly around her head, which had caused severe wounds. However, she had managed to dislodge the snare from where it had been secured. There was no sign of her herd, who may have abandoned her, or she may have become separated from them before becoming ensnared.

We hope the loss of Fenya will help to cast greater light on the devastating effects of snaring and encourage awareness to do what it takes to combat this in our wildlife reserves and communities.

Our HERD and our veterinarian team went above and beyond to try to save Fenyaโ€™s life, but her state was simply too severe, and her trauma endured too far along. Illegal snare hunting typically increases with growing percentages of unemployment and increasing population numbers in South Africa. Many communities are hungry and desperate and will continue to hunt wildlife through snaring, to be able to survive. It is a rising threat to our precious and vulnerable wildlife populations and one that sadly claimed Fenyaโ€™s life.

This is a digital print and you will be sent the downloadable file.
