At HERD (Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development), we believe that every elephant needs a herd. Our mission is to rehabilitate elephants orphaned or displaced due to human-elephant conflict and, ultimately, integrate them into a new and accepting herd. To do so successfully, we need sufficient funding.
We rely on donations to fund our work, and elephant fundraising on GivenGain offers the ideal third-party platform for anyone to help us raise money.
The Purpose Driving Us
Due to the severe elephant poaching pandemic in recent years, the number of elephant mothers has been declining steadily, which, in turn, rapidly increases the number of orphans and displaced elephant calves. Land conflict between man and elephant results in habitat loss and undeniable herd fragmentation, especially in a country with overpopulation and agriculture’s encroachment on wild habitats.
Adine Roode, Managing Director and owner of Jabulani, boldly decided to do something about it by building South Africa’s first dedicated elephant orphanage. Today, this unique programme provides a secure adoptive family structure for baby elephants in need, with the rescued Jabulani herd becoming a family for calves who have lost theirs.
At HERD, we strive to care for and rehabilitate these orphaned elephants to the best possible degree, to give them a second chance at life with a new herd.
