Spotty is a young Pedi sheep that arrived at HERD in December 2023. We decided to bring Spotty to the orphanage after it became clear that Lammie, our devoted animal surrogate mom, needed assistance with her caregiving duties. Spotty’s presence means that Lammie can get the rest she deserves and ensures that her nurturing legacy continues.
Spotty was born on a farm in Tzaneen, a town not too far away from Hoedspruit, in July 2023. Interestingly, this is the same month that Phabeni was born. Adine fetched Spotty from the farm that December, and he drove with her and her dog, Nandi, to HERD. During the trip, Spotty and Nandi became comfortable with each other, and the two are now good friends.
To our surprise, Spotty and Nandi’s friendship has also impacted Lammie and Nandi’s relationship. Lammie had always been cautious of Nandi, but Spotty’s friendships with them both became a bridge that brought the two closer together.
Since he arrived at HERD, Spotty has seamlessly integrated into life at the orphanage. Spotty and Lammie stand by Phabeni’s side every day and cosy up next to him every night, offering the calf comfort and companionship. Though initially a bit wary of the Spotty, Phabeni now enjoys running around with his new sheep friend. Fortunately, Spotty has more than enough energy to keep up with Phabeni.
Spotty still has much to learn from Lammie, but he seems to be a quick learner. We look forward to seeing the impact that Lammie’s guidance will have on the little sheep.
