Elephant Tales

Robert Mashile | A Life of Dedication and Pride

  • 05 January 2026

It is with deep sadness that we share the tragic loss of one of our most cherished team members, Robert Mashile, who passed away on Christmas Day, 2025. Robert was on his way to work from his family home in Oak Valley when the truck he was travelling in was struck in a collision. Three men, including Robert, lost their lives that day.

Robert was a man of quiet strength, whose actions spoke louder than words. For 17 years, he dedicated himself to HERD with unwavering commitment. He was known not only for his hard work but also for the pride he carried in every task he undertook. Whether cleaning the elephant homestead, preparing food or assisting with the reserve team, Robert approached each responsibility with diligence and care.

His daily routine was physically demanding: collecting dung and branches, washing down enclosures, cutting bana grass and preparing nutritious meals for the elephants. Yet Robert never complained. He found meaning in his work and carried it out with a sense of purpose that inspired those around him. On other days, he joined in rotating dung piles for fertiliser, moving irrigation lines or assisting the JabuLadies in the bush. No matter the assignment, Robert was always present, dependable and ready to give his best.

Beyond his work ethic, Robert was a man of personal pride. After long, gruelling days, he would take the time to clean up, presenting himself with neatness and dignity. His colleagues often remarked that he could be โ€œpulled through a ringโ€ after a shower. Always immaculate, always composed.

Robert embodied what it means to be a hard worker: reliable, disciplined and deeply proud of his role. He was not just a staff member; he was family to HERD. His presence, his dedication and his respect for the work will be remembered and missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Robert leaves behind his beloved wife, Thamarie, his sister, Antoinette, his three daughters and his three sons. With his passing, we also lose a piece of the heart of HERD. His legacy will live on in the stables he cared for, the elephants he served and the team he supported with such loyalty.

Rest in peace, Robert. Your work, your pride and your spirit will never be forgotten.
