On the 29th of August, we honour one of the herd’s most unforgettable characters, Mambo. Born in 2009 to Lundi, he was the fourth calf to join the Jabulani family. His name, meaning “King” or “Chief” in Shona, fits him perfectly. Over sixteen years, Mambo has grown into a spirited bull known for equal parts mischief, heart and strength.

The Young Bull with a Legacy
From his earliest days, Mambo’s energy was uncontainable. His rounded forehead, outward-pointing tusks, and a torn right ear (a trait shared with his mother) make him instantly recognisable. Whether he is splashing playfully with the herd, sparring in the mud or staging dramatic disappearances that require full-scale searches with helicopter assistance, his presence is always electric. Seasoned carers often joke that there is never a dull moment when Mambo is near.

A Bond Beyond Trouble
Despite his mischievous streak, Mambo’s heart is undeniable. He is most often seen at Khanyisa’s side, one moment abandoning her in a hurry, the next foraging quietly together. His bond with Zindoga has grown in recent years from youthful rivalry to loyal companionship. And through it all, his herd family, Lundi, Setombe, Sebakwe and Somopane, have offered a steady hand, guiding and sometimes gently correcting his energetic spirit.

Strength, Sweetness, and Something Wild
There is a rare mix of dynamics in Mambo. He can be wild, reckless and utterly independent, or calm, attentive and protective. One day he is teasing buffalo from afar, the next he is simply standing nearby, serene. His actions teach us that discovery often requires pushing boundaries, but connection is found in those quiet moments too.

Lessons in Confidence and Belonging
Mambo’s story reminds us of youthful courage and identity. He does not shy from testing the waters, or charging through the mud, to learn his place in the world. Yet he is also rooted in his herd, supported by experience, and deeply embedded in a community that nurtures him. His journey reflects what it means to grow into oneself while being loved and supported through every twist and turn.

Sixteen Years of Mambo
Today, Mambo stands as a confident and resilient young bull, still full of wonder and boundless energy, but grounded by love. His laughter, his trouble, his quiet moments of tenderness, all are celebrations of a life lived fiercely and freely within the Jabulani herd.
Happy 16th birthday, Mambo! May the next chapter of your wild and wonderful journey bring even more joy, exploration and endless adventures. 🐘
